Which is Better--Crossing the Finish Line or the Starting Line?

Start Line at Long Beach Marathon 2011
There is nothing like crossing the finish line at the end of a long race.  The sense of accomplishment feels great.  The mantra of "I can do this" suddenly changes to "I did this."  Its a great high.  But there is also nothing like crossing the starting line at the beginning of a race.  To me, the starting line can be even more exciting.

As I waited with my starting wave and 20,000 other runners yesterday in Long Beach, CA, a sense of excitement and anticipation filled the morning air.  At the start line, no one knows exactly how their race will go for them, but everyone plans to give it their best shot.  The mood is upbeat and smiles are everywhere.  There is a sense of support just being in the sea of runners.  The starting line is one of my favorite parts of a race.  While I love crossing the finish line--I especially love crossing the starting line.  Fresh across the start with thousands of fellow runners, the long awaited challenge is on!

What challenges are you excited about starting in life?  As you work on finishing other goals in life, challenge yourself to start new ones too, whether personal or in your career.  Start small or start slow, but go ahead and start.  Every great business was a start-up at one time.  Some started in a garage.  And don't let excuses like old age or your condition stop you from starting.   If 85-year-old Antoinette Hill ran in yesterday's marathon, then we don't have good excuses for nearly anything in life.  She's completed 35 marathons, four triathlons and numerous half- marathons in her life.  And she didn't start running until she was 50.

They say that starting a task is a task half done.  Its a great truth.  Inertia turns into momentum. A plan is put into action.  The boat leaves the dock and a new adventure begins.

What starting line awaits you in life?  Getting ready for marriage?  Better health?  A new job? A new attitude?  Like any runner, you may not know exactly how your race will turn out, but you also can give it your best shot.  Don't stay out of the race and never cross the start line.  Don't let others pass you by while you wait and watch.  Join the momentum.  If you need personal coaching to get over self-defeating thoughts, doubts or fears, pick up the phone and give me a call.  You are not alone.  Everyone can use support.  I'd love to help you cross your own starting line and into the adventure that is waiting for you.
